Strategy not Tactics
Far too many business owners start their marketing in the wrong place i.e. their focus is on tactics not on strategy.
Strategy
means that you have determined, in advance, an ultimate goal you would like to achieve for each tactic.
Tactics
are the things you do to achieve your goal. A tactic is a marketing effort like; a yellow page ad, a newsletter, a speaking engagement, a sales call, a trade show, a newspaper ad, a meeting with a new client, etc.
Why don't people focus on strategy?
Most small business owners are so busy running around doing all they need to do. Marketing is put in the "too hard" basket and so they don't make time to strategical plan their marketing. Their decision making becomes reactionary. An advertising sales person phones and since they haven't advertised for while they sign up without any real plan of attack. Sound familiar? The irony is that once you've determined your strategy then deciding what tactics to use becomes a walk in the park.
Can a small business afford a marketing plan?
Traditionally, marketing plans have been 15-30 page documents that cost several thousand dollars, take ages to develop and then sit on the shelf collecting dust. This might be fine in medium and large enterprises where people can justify their jobs if there is a marketing plan somewhere within the company but in small business you can't afford any wastage.
